Financial services have been early and aggressive adopters of AI. Algorithmic trading, credit scoring, fraud detection, risk modeling, customer service automation, and anti-money laundering systems all rely heavily on AI. The financial sector processes more data, makes more automated decisions, and touches more lives than almost any other industry.
That combination of scale and impact is exactly why the EU AI Act pays special attention to financial AI.
Credit scoring and lending. AI models that assess creditworthiness are replacing or augmenting traditional scoring methods. These models can incorporate wider data sources, potentially extending credit to individuals who would be rejected by conventional scores. But they can also introduce new forms of discrimination that are harder to detect.
Fraud detection. AI excels at identifying unusual patterns in transaction data. Modern fraud detection systems analyze transactions in real time, learning to distinguish genuine anomalies from normal variations in customer behavior. These systems save the financial industry billions annually.
Algorithmic trading. AI-driven trading strategies can process market data, news, social sentiment, and economic indicators simultaneously to make trading decisions in milliseconds. While this improves market liquidity and price discovery, it also introduces systemic risks.
Customer service. AI chatbots and virtual assistants handle a growing share of customer interactions. In banking, AI assistants can answer account queries, explain products, and guide customers through processes that previously required human agents.
Risk management. AI models that assess portfolio risk, model stress scenarios, and predict market movements are becoming standard tools for risk management teams. These models can process complexity that exceeds human analytical capacity.
Regulatory compliance. Ironically, AI is also being used to help meet regulatory requirements. RegTech solutions use AI for transaction monitoring, regulatory reporting, and compliance checking.
The AI Act classifies several financial AI applications as high-risk. Credit scoring and creditworthiness assessment are explicitly listed. Insurance pricing and claims assessment AI also falls under high-risk classification.

The logic is straightforward: AI decisions in finance directly affect people's access to financial products, housing, insurance, and economic opportunity. When these decisions are wrong or biased, the impact on individuals can be severe and difficult to reverse.
Specific requirements for financial AI include:
Explainability is critical. When a loan application is denied based on AI assessment, the applicant has a right to understand why. "The algorithm decided" is not an acceptable explanation. Financial institutions must be able to provide meaningful explanations of AI-driven decisions.
Fairness testing must be ongoing. Financial AI must be regularly tested for discriminatory outcomes across protected groups. This goes beyond traditional model validation. It requires active monitoring for disparate impact on age, gender, ethnicity, disability, and other protected characteristics.
Data quality standards are elevated. Financial AI training data must meet high standards for accuracy, relevance, and representativeness. Given that financial data often reflects historical discrimination in lending and insurance, particular care is needed to prevent these patterns from being perpetuated.
Human oversight must be meaningful. Financial institutions must ensure that human reviewers have sufficient authority, competence, and time to genuinely oversee AI decisions. A rubber-stamp review process does not meet the requirement.
Financial services are already heavily regulated. The AI Act adds to existing frameworks including MiFID II (investment services), the Consumer Credit Directive, Solvency II (insurance), and GDPR. Financial institutions must navigate the intersection of these regulatory regimes.
This creates both challenges and advantages. The challenge is complexity: compliance teams must understand how AI Act requirements interact with sector-specific regulations. The advantage is that financial institutions already have compliance infrastructure, risk management frameworks, and audit processes that can be extended to cover AI-specific requirements.
Map your AI systems. Create a comprehensive inventory of every AI system used in your organization, including third-party AI embedded in vendor products. Classify each system according to the AI Act risk categories.
Prioritize high-risk systems. Focus compliance efforts first on credit scoring, insurance pricing, and other systems that directly affect customer outcomes. These carry both the highest regulatory risk and the highest potential for customer harm.
Strengthen model governance. If you already have model risk management frameworks (as most financial institutions do), extend them to cover AI Act requirements. This typically means adding bias testing, explainability assessment, and enhanced documentation.
Build AI literacy across functions. AI in finance is not just a technology team concern. Risk managers, compliance officers, relationship managers, and senior leadership all need AI literacy appropriate to their role.
Engage with supervisors early. Financial regulators across Europe are developing AI-specific supervisory approaches. Proactive engagement demonstrates good faith and provides early insight into supervisory expectations.
Financial institutions that get AI governance right will have a genuine competitive advantage. Customers increasingly care about fair treatment. Regulators reward proactive compliance. And well-governed AI actually performs better because it is less likely to produce biased, unreliable, or unexplainable outputs.
